Pilates 44 Studio

“Perimenopause or “second puberty” is the two to ten years before the final period. It’s different from menopause, which is the life phase that begins one year after the final period. Symptoms, if they occur at all, occur mostly during perimenopause and are temporary.” Lara Biden - naturopathic doctor author of Hormone Repair Manual

Many women during these stages uptick their exercise. The main reason given is because they are struggling to deal with weight gain. At the same time they are also struggling with lethargy, insomnia, migraine headaches, aching joints, forgetfulness, lack of special awareness (left and right is a good example), brain fog and vagueness. There were also notable changes in some with plantar fasciitis and arthritic changes in the hands, generally due tom loss of collagen with changing hormones.

Perimenopause and menopause need special consideration when designing programs for movement so as to balance the need to move the body with the fine line of over exciting stress hormones which feed into all of the above mentioned symptoms. Pilates may offer alleviation from symptoms that are experienced during these times. Including; Fatigue and lethargy, bone density loss, strength and flexibility, coordination and cognition, balance and also mental health.

Our reformer and equipment sessions are designed specifically with these needs in mind. It is a focus that our Studio specializes in. Programs are designed to include resistance training, cardiovascular, balance exercises, stretching and releasing for flexibility, breathing techniques to induce relaxation, lymphatic drainage and bringing the body more in to the para sympathetic nervous system.
