Senescence 70+

The text book definition of Senescence or biological aging, is the gradual change of functional characteristics in living organisms. The concept of successful and healthy ageing has been generally associated with longevity, and the absence of disease and disability. Successful ageing is a multidimensional concept encompassing domains of physical, functional, social, and psychological health

Our short workshop touches on the importance of exercise and nutrition as part of a broader strategy to help maintain good health, function and independence.

Learn about how exercise and nutrition can influence:

Mental Health - Boosting endorphins. Neurotransmitters that are released by the brain in response to pain or stress.

Bone Health - Osteogenic exercises maintain bone density and build new bone to reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

Muscle Health - Prevent muscle loss, build lean mass, reduce falls, bone health, manage blood sugar, reduce risk of chronic diseases.

Metabolic Health – Maintain a healthy lipid profile. Increase lean muscle mass and reduce visceral fat deposits and insulin resistance.

Sleep Health – Maintain over-all health and well-being from mood and concentration to immune system strength and physical health.

Circulatory Health – Maintain healthy heart and lung function, healthy cholesterol levels and healthy blood pressure levels.

Other factors that we'll explore:

Ageism -  Often, older women are perceived to be vulnerable, stubborn, and frail, invisible.

Social Isolation - It’s not always easy to maintain social connection, but there are lots of health benefits associated with having good social connections.

Caring for Others - About one in eight women in Australia are carers. When we are caring for others we can feel very isolated and alone. Carers are those who provide unpaid care and support.

Grief and Loss - As we age we can experience many different kinds of grief and loss.
